Psalm 121
Artist Statement 2014
On the last day of 2013 (New Year's Eve), I had the
privilege of walking up Scarfell Pike in the Lake District
with a few close friends and one of my sons. It was
visually an awe-inspiring experience. Against the
drama of Scarfell itself there was the visual contrast of
mist, storm clouds and patches of golden winter light
breaking through. I had to paint the scene!
We all need help and someone to turn to at certain
times in our lives. These verses speak of the
permanence of God as well as His power to help. My
hope is that as you view these works and the 100 or
so in the actual exhibition you will be reminded of that
and feel a sense of peace, particularly if you face your
own mountain to climb.
John 1:5
Artist Statement 2013
We all need a sense of light in our
busy and often frenetic lives. The
phrase 'light at the end of the tunnel' is
a well-worn one. This verse from John's
gospel tells of an eternal light, which
brings hope. Whatever our situation
in life, this light and hope can never be
extinguished.
I hope that as you view these works, you
will feel a sense of 'light', a sense of help
at hand and ultimately a sense of hope
for the future.
is made perfect in weakness."
2 corinthians 12:9
Artist Statement 2012
Over the last year 'Reflections' has been
a recurrent theme both
creatively and spiritually.
Within my work I have been
'reflecting' artistically by
portraying the same view in
different seasons and light.
Painting reflections has been
inspiring. it has also enabled
me to pursue elements of mark
making and abstraction in my
work. spiritually, I have been
reflecting on 'Grace' -- that
is God's favour and kindness
towards us, His acceptance of
us and ultimately His desire to
help us.
I hope that in some small way
these works reflect that grace.
it is my intention that, as you
view them, you will feel a sense
of grace, a sense of help at
hand and ultimately a sense of
peace.
He restores my soul."
Psalm 23:2-3 J
Artist Statement 2011
For most of us, life poses its fair share of challenges
and difficulties. Some large and momentous,
others small and faced on a daily basis. Globally, we
have been through some difficult social, political and
economic times.
We are all in need of respite and restoration from
time to time. These verses in Psalm 23 (below)
were written by King David, himself no stranger to
difficult situations. They convey a promise, by God,
that He will "restore" us. This restoration is of our
spiritual, mental and physical being. Perhaps it is also a
restoration of our relationship with God.
I hope that as you view the works of art in this
exhibition, you will feel led by quiet waters and that
you will receive restoration, respite, and ultimately a
sense of peace in your life.

ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6:16
Artist Statement 2010
We all face choices on a daily basis. Some are small, others momentous
and life changing. Decision making is not always easy and we don't always get it right.
These verses from the book of Jeremiah are an encouragement to see choices,
and indeed life, as a positive thing. Jeremiah exhorts us to take time to stand and look to consider the good choices others have made and to lead our lives in a good way.
I take great
encouragement from the promise that we will then find peace in our souls.
I hope that in viewing these works and the hundred or so in the exhibition, you will find peace as you face your own personal choices and decisions. As you stand at your own crossroadsmay you be inspired to look for and choose the good way.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
Artist Statement 2009
In these times of fiscal and economic uncertainty
it is good to reflect on those things that are of
importance and permanence in ones life. For me,
that has been my faith. More specifically I have
found it valuable to reflect on God as a refuge
and help in uncertain times.
Psalm 46, around which this exhibition is based,
seems to be written for our times. I hope that in
viewing these paintings and the hundred or so in
the exhibition, you will gain a sense of the peace
that I derived from painting them.
